Mountain Spring

"Is Spring really here?" we ask ourselves each year. Winter seemed so dark with its short days, harsh with its snow and ice, and long lasting - almost as if it would never end.
That makes the arrival of Spring all the more glorious. Some say it is the most beautiful time of the year - although for reasons that are not altogether clear the poet T.S. Eliot began his great poem The Wasteland with the words "April is the cruelest month…" He thought this most glorious month of the year was cruel when instead of fulfilling the promise of great joy it symbolized a world in great turmoil.
The photographers for this issue have done a masterful job of capturing the magnificent colors and shapes that announce the season. Detail shots that focus our eye on each petal growing out of its stem express the joy we feel when we see new life on trees for the first time. The more expansive images - of a blossoming tree in one instance and a landscape with mountains in the distance in another - give us a sense of the grandeur of Spring. And when we see flowers bursting forth on the ground we can imagine how wonderful it must have been to stand on the spot in which the photographer looked through the camera viewfinder.
It's time for all of us to take out our cameras and capture the beautiful sights around us in all parts of the Catskill Mountains. There is no better time to take photographs that we will treasure for a long time to come.
