The Glow Of The Fading Sun In Autumn

November 2001

For reasons that are hard to explain, there is a certain light in autumn that is different from the light in the rest of the year. Perhaps we become most conscious of the difference when the sun is low on the horizon and the evening shadows are deepening. This is always a particularly beautiful time of day. The softness of the fading light casts a wonderful glow over the landscape, and the colors we see at the end of the day in this time of the year can be spectacular.

Our cover photograph captures the kind of brilliant sunset that we can sometimes see if we are lucky to look at the sky just as the sun is approaching the horizon. The colors change literally from second to second, and if we look carefully for a few moments we can be treated to an exquisite show in the sky. When the light fades and the colors disappear, we are both thrilled by the magnificence we were privileged to witness and sad that it has come to an end so quickly.

Each of the photographs in this month’s portfolio is inspiring in its own way. In one we see the thin, beautifully composed branches reaching up to the yellowing sky. In another we glimpse the glow of the sun behind a bird perched on an upright post with water in the background. In one of the double-page spreads we see the tiny figure of a man in a boat on the Hudson, mesmerized by the sight of the disappearing sun. In the other double-page spread we have the feeling that night is already descending on the scenic view of the river and its forested shore. And then there is the sky so filled with rich golden hues that we have to gasp at its momentary brilliance.

We are grateful for the sharp eye of the photographers who captured these precious moments and have made this portfolio for The Guide a special treat.
